Financed and built through the UCIA, the Union County
Juvenile Detention
Facility opened in April 2008. The facility houses 80
residents, both male and
female. The 70,000 square foot building is masonry and steel
construction and
includes almost an acre of outdoor courtyard space. The
design includes
a full service kitchen, and includes medical, family,
visitation, and other
programmatic areas for residents and staff.
The resident housing areas includes four units containing 16
rooms each, and two
units containing eight rooms each, including bedrooms,
toilet/shower areas,
and multi-purpose space. Each unit includes a large communal
dayroom,
and access to the courtyard space. Because each unit is
self-contained, the
County now has the ability to shut down individual units if
the resident population
is low, which will help better control operational and
personnel costs.
Finally, the one-story facility is expandable, as there is
additional
land to build upon if necessary, without disruption to its
operation.
